Find-a-Friend Friday: George the Turkey (Sultan, Washington)

I know that Tofurky Day has come and gone, but in honor of the holiday, today’s adoptable animal is (drumroll please) a turkey!

Depending on where you live, adoptable farmed animals aren’t always easy to find locally; birds who are exploited for their meat, like chickens and turkeys, are even rarer at shelters and humane societies. So today, let’s take a trip to Sultan, Washington, where Pasado’s Safe Haven cares for a variety of companion and farmed animals – turkeys included.

Along with Newbie and Eagle, George the turkey is one of a few lucky birds who have found refuge at Pasado’s.

George the Turkey

George is a 3 year old, male, Bronze Turkey. The Bronze turkey has very big, patterned and colored, fanning plumage to show off and this big beautiful guy is a typical older male turkey. He is very confident, and gets along well with everyone, assuming they give him room to strut and spread out those gorgeous feathers that make the turkey ladies swoon!

George is able to fly, and can go over the 4 foot fence with ease, so any family that takes George in, should be aware that he needs an extra high enclosure to keep him safe from predators. George gets along well with chickens, roosters, and other turkeys, but should be monitored when he is with other male turkeys to ensure that no rivalries are started. George loves to roost, and it is not uncommon to find him perched somewhere high, resting and watching the flock.

As some of you may know, 40 Days for Life is a religiously affiliated campaign of protests against abortion, held outside of women’s health clinics. This is currently taking place and runs through November 4th. Most likely, these protests are being held at clinics near you as you read this.

40 Days for Life runs in 316 locations in 49 US States, 7 Canadian Provinces, Australia, England, Spain, and Uganda.

Their website states that their mission is “40 days of prayer and fasting, constant vigil, and community outreach”. This, unfortunately, is not the case. This campaign has turned into 40 days of harassing women in and outside of the clinics, video taping patients as they walk into clinics, and taking pictures of cars/license plates.

So far, women have had protesters show up at their homes placing signs about their abortion in their front yards, phone calls in the middle of the night harassing them, and employees at the clinics have gone through the same issues. What these people don’t understand is that:

1.) These are women’s health clinics that also provide birth control, pap smears, and other reproductive health services. Not all patients are going in for abortion services. 
2.) Abortion is still legal in this country!

So how can you help?
All clinics are looking for escorts to help patients in and out of clinics, not only to protect them from harassment but, to let them know they are not alone in their struggles. A list of all locations that 40 Days for Life will be protesting is provided below. If you have free time on your hands and would like touch the hearts of these struggling women, please contact your local clinic and volunteer!
